Tuesday Mom, Amy and I took the kids up to Lincoln National Monument to take a great foot tour of Billy the Kid's old stompin' grounds. ( http://www.newmexico.org/explore/monuments/lincoln.php ) A collection of old buildings that you can walk thru and relive history, the late 1800's to be specific.
One of the more popular 'claims to fame' that Lincoln County, New Mexico has is it's rich history in Billy the Kid's adventurous lifestyle and folklore. With it's vast, wild, rugged landscape, it's pretty easy to picture the wild, wild west. You know, the shoot 'em up, John Wayne, Billy the Kid stuff. Cactus, sand, mountains, vast open spaces, small, sleeper towns, dirt roads....get the picture?!
Even though the kids got a bit tired of all the buildings after a while, we did have fun roaming thru history. Up and down the dusty roads. Periodically a semi would roar thru town and that kinda messed up the whole wild west thing. But to hear the tractors and seeing the cowboys in their hats brought it all back.
As we ended our tour, I reached for my car key when it hit me - for the first time in my life I realized I locked it in the car. And a rental to boot! Well, thanks to keyless entry on the Ford, and Thrifty having it on file, we were only set back about 10 minutes. Couldn't do anything but laugh at my self! And be so very thankful for keyless entry!!!
We went into Capitan and had some amazingly fantastic pizza for lunch. The kids had pepperoni (of course!) and we adults had Hawaiian - ham, bacon and pineapple. It was deeeee-vine! After lunch we headed back to Grandma's and hung out for the remainder of the day. Yet another lazy, relaxing afternoon at Grandma's in the desert.
Life is sweet.
